DMV Employee Injured
Suspect Arrested on Two Felony Counts
Las Vegas Metro Police arrested a man Friday on two felony counts related to injuries suffered by a Department of Motor Vehicles employee on Wednesday, July 25th.
Burton Howard Stein, 64, of Las Vegas was charged with Intimidating a Public Officer by Threat or Physical Harm and Battery with Bodily Harm.
Stein allegedly twisted the arm of a DMV technician as she was reaching out to shake his hand at the DMV office at 8250 W. Flamingo Rd. Wednesday afternoon at approximately 4:30 p.m. The technician, who asked not to be identified, was treated for wrist injuries at an urgent care facility. Doctors put her arm in a sling pending further tests to determine the extent of her injuries.
Stein had phoned earlier in the week for an appointment to transfer his drivers license and registration from out-of-state. The DMV technician advised him of the documents needed for the transaction and advised him to come into the office for a document review when he was ready.
The customer did so late Wednesday afternoon and became irate after waiting in line approximately 30 minutes. Cursing, he asked to speak to a supervisor and asked to see the technician he had spoken with on the phone. The telephone technician came out to greet him as a courtesy and was injured as she reached out to shake his hand.
The suspect returned to the DMV both Thursday and Friday and was arrested upon his return Friday morning. The technician, her supervisor and DMV management will pursue the charges and cooperate fully with prosecutors. The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles has a long standing policy that it will not tolerate violence or threats of violence against any employee.
