IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 9, 2004
NEWS FROM: Director's Office
The Department of Motor Vehicles is warning residents against a telephone scam reported in central Nevada.
A resident of Mina near Hawthorne received a phone call informing him that he had won a “Motor Vehicle Lottery” in the amount of $347,000. The caller informed the resident that in order to claim the prize, he needed to remit $1,500. The resident reported the call instead to the Hawthorne DMV office and local law enforcement.
Nevada has no official lottery and the Department of Motor Vehicles does not sponsor any type of contest or sweepstakes.
