IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 7, 2005
NEWS FROM: Compliance Enforcement Division
A Department of Motor Vehicles employee faces felony charges following her arrest Saturday, April 2, at the DMV office at 8250 W. Flamingo Rd.
Charita Murray Carter, 40, a Las Vegas resident, faces two counts of Possession and Sale of Documents for the Purpose of Establishing False Status or Identity. She remains in custody in the Clark County Detention Center. Bail was set at $6,000 with a preliminary hearing set for April 19th.
DMV Compliance Enforcement officers arrested Carter following an undercover sting operation Saturday afternoon. Carter accepted a false birth certificate, false social security card and $500 in return for issuing a Nevada Identification Card to a confidential informant. The arrest resulted in two charges as the informant had previously obtained a different ID card in a similar manner in September, 2004.
The initial information in the case came from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, which also assisted in the undercover operation Saturday.
The investigation is continuing and additional charges may be filed against Carter. Each of the current charges carries a penalty of one to five years in prison and a maximum fine of $10,000. DMV will actively assist the Clark County District Attorney’s Office to ensure Carter is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Carter has been placed on administrative leave without pay pending a formal termination hearing. DMV is conducting an extensive audit of her past transactions. In suspicious cases, DMV may request, by mail, that license or ID card holders provide proof of identity documentation.
