Nevada Division of Investigation Findings Identify Skeletal Remains

1996 John Doe case solved

Investigators from the Nevada Division of Investigation, in conjunction with Storey County Sheriffs Department and the Washoe County Coroner’s Office have identified the remains of a white adult male found on a Geiger Grade embankment by a hiker on November 26, 1996 . The man has been identified as former Sparks resident, 45-year old Anthony Strike (aka, Anthony Whitely).

In April, a witness came forward stating that he helped dispose of Strike’s body after Strike had died of a heroin overdose in the man's apartment. Positive identification was made after medical records for Strike were compared to that of the body found on Geiger Grade. The witness claimed that after Strike’s death, he and others feared they may be implicated in Strike’s death and thus decided to remove the body from the apartment, later placing it down an embankment off Geiger Grade.

NDI Investigator Martin Roberto said, "Our investigation revealed that Anthony Strike did most likely die of a heroin overdose." Roberto added, "It is not known who supplied the heroin which resulted in the death of Anthony Strike. Unfortunately, the one year statute of limitations has expired on Washoe County Code, Chapter 35.230 which pertains notifying officials of knowledge of the location and existence of a deceased person."
