You must meet the specific requirements listed on each plate's application.
For Pearl Harbor plates, present one of the acceptable documents listed above. There is no separate application.
If your vehicle is currently registered in Nevada, download and complete the appropriate application. Bring this, any required documentation and the old plates to a DMV Full Service Office or County Assessor which offers vehicle registration services. If you wish to keep the old plates, you must bring the rear plate and surrender the decal in person.
If you choose to keep the same expiration date, we will issue your new plates with a new registration slip and decal. No emissions inspection or registration renewal is required. A $5 substitute plate fee will apply.
You have the option of renewing your vehicle registration for a full year. In addition to the plate application, you will need to complete an emissions inspection if required and if the last test was completed more than 90 days ago. Your expiration date will change if the current expiration date is more than 35 days away. Credit will be given for the unused portion of your current Nevada registration.
If you have just purchased a vehicle or are registering it in Nevada for the first time, see the full list of Registration Requirements or New Resident Guide and use our online Registration Fee Estimates. Bring all required documentation along with the appropriate license plate application to a DMV Full Service Office or County Assessor which offers vehicle registration services.
Personalized - Use our online Personalized Plate Search to check for available numbers. Complete the personalized section of the Veteran License Plate Application (SP 33). You can order by mail, fax or in person at a DMV office. See How to Order Custom Plates for details.
Nevada grants tax exemptions for many veterans.
Veterans with certain dates of service are eligible for a partial governmental services tax exemption. See Nevada Revised Statute 371.103 for the specific dates.
You must present your DD-214 or discharge papers at your local County Assessor office. The Assessor will determine the amount of the exemption and issue a receipt which you submit at the same time you register your vehicle or renew. The exemption cannot be applied after the registration or renewal is completed.
Disabled veterans are eligible for exemptions based on the percentage of disability. These are also granted through your local County Assessor.
Veterans can designate part or all of their exemption to be used for support of Nevada Veterans Homes. Complete the Designation of Use for Veterans Exemption (VP 187) and present it with the exemption certificate when you register your vehicle or renew.
A veterans exemption may be transferred to the veteran's spouse. Proof of marriage is required. Complete the Affidavit for Transfer of Exemption to Spouse (VP 259) and present it with the exemption certificate when you register your vehicle or renew.
These exemptions apply to the governmental services taxes on your vehicle registration and are separate from sales taxes and other fees. Sales taxes must be paid on vehicle purchases.
Active duty military members in combat or combat support roles may request an exemption from registration late fees using the Active Duty Military Combat Affidavit (VP 258).
For more information on veterans' benefits, see the Nevada Office of Veterans Services and the Nevada Revised Statutes Index under Veterans.
