DMV&PS Director Names Chief of Nevada Division of Investigation

20-year Public Safety veteran appointed to lead Division

Acting Chief of the Nevada Division of Investigation, (serving as Interim Chief since February 2001) David Hosmer, was named today as Chief of the Division by the Department of Motor Vehicles and Public Safety's Director, Richard Kirkland. "I am very pleased to announce the selection of David Hosmer as Chief of the Division of Investigation. After nearly 20 years with the Division, his excellent law enforcement insight and experience will be a tremendous asset for our Department."

In his role as Interim Chief, one of Hosmer's top priorities has been to conduct a fundamental review of all of the programs administered by the Nevada Division of Investigation to ensure that the Division is providing the highest level of service to law enforcement agencies and to the public.

Hosmer has been a member of NDI since 1983. His last assignment was as Deputy Chief in charge of statewide narcotics enforcement programs for the Division. As Deputy Chief, Mr. Hosmer helped develop and oversee the "Prescription Controlled Substance Abuse Prevention Task Force" in concert with the Nevada State Board of Pharmacy and the Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Abuse. Mr. Hosmer was also responsible for the oversight of seven multi-jurisdictional narcotics task forces throughout the state.

Mr. Hosmer began his law enforcement career as a United States Air Force Security Policeman in 1974. In 1980, he joined the Nevada Highway Patrol and was assigned to Ely, NV. He then transferred to the Division of Investigation and over the next eight years worked as a criminal investigator assigned at various times to the Narcotics, Major Crimes and Intelligence Sections. Mr. Hosmer also served as supervisor for the NDI Las Vegas and Laughlin offices from 1991 to 1996.

Mr. Hosmer holds an associates degree in criminal justice and is a graduate of the Northwestern University Traffic Institutes' School of Police Staff and Command and the FBI Southwest Command College.

In addition to narcotics enforcement, the Nevada Division of Investigation provides investigative assistance to any federal, state, county or local law enforcement agency upon request, such as the recent fatal officer involved shooting in Virginia City. This type of independent investigation is vital to maintaining public trust and agency integrity.
